Improving West Side Tops Agenda

Improving the city’s west side tops Mayor Peter Buffa’s plans for 1998.
Attracting development, improving shopping centers and cleaning up the area west of Newport Boulevard will improve property values, particularly near the coast and along coastal bluffs, he said.
“That will be my major focus during my last year as mayor,” Buffa said.
Projects already in the works in the west side for the new year include make-overs for the Mesa Verde and Harbor centers. On the east side, the city is looking forward to the late-summer opening of a Borders bookstore at Newport Boulevard and 19th Street.
Other plans include transforming the Costa Mesa High School farm site into athletic fields, revamping Fairview Park and building a connector road between the Costa Mesa and Corona del Mar freeways.
