Father Lawrence Caruso; Long Beach Pastor, Principal

Father Lawrence Caruso, 70, pastor of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Long Beach and principal of its high school. Caruso grew up in Los Angeles and was a teacher, football coach and principal at St. Francis High School in La Canada Flintridge. He also assisted at the Holy Family parish in South Pasadena. In the early 1980s, he became a pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Silver Lake and served as assistant superintendent of the Los Angeles Archdiocese’s high schools before going to St. Anthony in 1993. St. Anthony elementary and high school alumni include California Atty. Gen. Dan Lungren, San Francisco Archbishop William Levada, Long Beach Unified School District Supt. Carl Cohen, Long Beach Councilwoman Doris Topsy-Elvord and nearly 50 priests, a school official said. In Long Beach of a heart attack Wednesday.
