Oil Spill in Water Forces Port Closure
A 50-gallon oil spill in the Port of Hueneme forced the Coast Guard to close the port for more than 12 hours over the weekend, authorities said.
Coast Guard Lt. Jeanne Reincke said an employee of the port authority reported seeing an oil sheen on the water about 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
At 9 p.m., the Coast Guard closed the port to all traffic.
Crews from Clean Seas, a cleanup firm supported by the oil industry, arrived soon after and began removing the oil from the water.
Coast Guard authorities said they were trying to determine where it came from, said Reincke.
