OXNARD — A man was killed Sunday night when he was struck by a car while walking in the southbound lanes of the Ventura Freeway at the Wagon Wheel offramp, authorities said.
The man, whose identity was not available, was hit about 9 p.m., said Oxnard Fire Capt. Chris Donabedian.
Authorities said the man, believed in his late 30s, did not appear to be a stranded motorist. “I’m not sure what he was doing in the freeway lanes,” Donabedian said.
Paramedics took the man to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
“He had apparent massive head injuries,” Donabedian said.
The Highway Patrol closed the offramp for about 40 minutes. The investigation is continuing.
