Exercise Teacher Will Be Honored

Dau Bac Mai, who developed a unique exercise program in his native Vietnam and now teaches the techniques to local seniors, will be honored by the City Council tonight for his work.
Longevity stick, a 12-movement exercise regimen, is similar to tai chi but uses a long stick for balance. Mai, 76, teaches the techniques to more than 200 seniors a week in Westminster, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach and Stanton, many of whom report greater flexibility and health.
A council resolution praises Mai for “assisting many of our seniors to improve their health and adding to the joy of their retirement years.”
Mai said he developed the longevity stick exercises to regain his mobility after suffering a stroke in a Vietnamese prison camp in 1972.
The City Council will meet at 7 p.m. at 8200 Westminster Blvd.
