Lamar Odom, one of the nation’s top high school players last year, won’t play for No. 20 Rhode Island this season because he failed to qualify to become a full-time student.

The school let Odom enroll as a part-time student for the fall semester to give him a chance to earn the 2.4 grade-point average he needed for full-time status.

“Unfortunately,” university President Robert Carothers said, Odom “did not meet the terms” of a contract he had with Rhode Island for admission as a full-time student.

Carothers said Odom plans to continue as a part-time student, which would enable him to try to qualify for full-time status next fall.

Wake Forest center Loren Woods has been suspended indefinitely from the team for reasons related to basketball, Coach Dave Odom announced.

Woods, a 7-foot-1 sophomore, has started all 14 games and is the team’s third-leading scorer (11.6 points per game) and its top rebounder (8.6).

Arkansas Coach Nolan Richardson said Ali Thompson would be reinstated, but that he would not give the 6-5 junior forward any more chances.

Richardson suspended Thompson indefinitely Tuesday after his arrest in Fayetteville, Ark., on a driving-while-intoxicated charge.

Charles Jones, the nation’s leading scorer, made an uncontested driving layup with 1.9 seconds remaining to break a 76-76 tie, and Long Island University defeated St. Francis, N.Y., 80-76, at New York.
