Deputy Injured in Training Exercise

A Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was injured while participating in a swift-water training exercise in the Los Angeles Aqueduct Friday morning.
The 43-year-old deputy, assigned to the sheriff’s emergency services detail, was part of a training session sponsored by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
The deputy, who was not named by sheriff’s officials, suffered a mild concussion and lacerations to his head and contusions to his back when he was dragged under rapidly flowing water, officials said. Other exercise participants hoisted him out of the water by grabbing safety lines attached to the deputy. He was underwater for about 30 seconds, Deputy Elsa Azila said.
Paramedics took the deputy to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.
Fire Department spokesman Bob Collis said the deputy never lost consciousness and was only momentarily disoriented.
Hospital officials said the deputy would remain at the hospital overnight for observation.
