Library Improvements Limited to $1.6 Million

When the renovated Main Library on Chapman Avenue reopens in the fall, residents will find a technology center, improved reference services and a new children’s section.
That was the result of a budget compromise this week between library supporters and City Council members, who said they wanted to restrain spending on the project.
Last month, the city agreed to spend $850,000 to buy the Bank of America building, which sits on an adjacent site, in preparation for an entirely new library within the next 10 years.
Library officials had hoped the city might agree to spend $2.6 million on the renovation--even as an interim step.
Instead, the council voted 4 to 1 to spend $1.6 million on the project and to reconsider some of the items lopped off the budget later.
Councilman Mike Alvare said he voted against the measure because he wanted more of the budget items approved.
