Cal Poly Pomona’s miracle run to the NCAA Division II women’s soccer championship continued Thursday, as the Broncos won in overtime for the fifth consecutive time and advanced to Saturday’s championship match at Miami.
Shellie Shineding’s quadruple-overtime goal in the 142nd minute gave eighth-ranked Pomona a 2-1 victory over fourth-ranked Barry of Florida in the second semifinal. Top-ranked Franklin Pierce of New Hampshire defeated No. 7 Northern Kentucky, 2-0, in the other semifinal and will play the Broncos in the championship game.
It was the third time in the last four games the Broncos (17-5-1) have gone into the fourth overtime.
“This one was easier because we’ve been through it so many times,” Coach Carlos Juarez said.
Junior Ruth Van’t Land, the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.’s all-time leading scorer, scored her 17th goal of the season and 59th of her career to tie the game in the 62nd minute. She also set up Shineding’s game winner over Barry (16-3-1).
