A Theatrical Ally

I just wanted to write a note of congratulations to The Times for hiring a fantastic theater critic. Michael Phillips is not only a concise, educated voice in the theater, he really seems to care about the Los Angeles theater community.
Los Angeles has more than 250 99-seat and smaller houses that do some incredibly risky work. Sometimes it’s great work. Sometimes it’s not. It’s wonderful that he’s willing to take a chance on some of these smaller productions and even give them key placement in his reviews. I know I’m not just speaking for myself when I say his support of smaller theaters and local theater artists means a great deal. I don’t always agree with his opinions, but they are backed by knowledge and respect for the artists involved, while often challenging them to work to their fullest potential.
I think L.A. theater has found a new ally, and I hope he’s here for a good long time.
