Ousted Romanian Premier Drops Bid to Keep Job

BUCHAREST, Romania — Moving to end a governance crisis, Romania’s dismissed prime minister announced Tuesday that he was abandoning a fight to keep his job after he was fired in a move that some legal experts said was unconstitutional.
President Emil Constantinescu dismissed Radu Vasile, 57, early Tuesday, claiming that he was unable to carry out his duties as premier.
The firing came after seven Cabinet members from Vasile’s own Christian and Democratic National Peasants’ Party quit to send a message that he no longer had the support of his five-party coalition.
Alexandru Athanasiu, the labor and social welfare minister, was named interim prime minister.
