Oxnard (7-1) didn’t exactly blow away the opposition in winning the Thousand Oaks boys’ tournament last week, but Coach Henry Lobo wasn’t complaining.
The Yellowjacket coach said he’d rather be involved in close games than in blowouts at this stage of the season.
“This is one of those games that you want early in the season,” Lobo said after No. 3 Oxnard came from behind to beat Newbury Park, 68-60, in a pool play game last Wednesday. “You want to have those close, physical games that will make you tougher later in the season.”
The Yellowjackets defeated host Thousand Oaks, 52-48, in a semifinal Friday, and beat Santa Barbara, 63-62, in the championship game on Saturday when Nicholas Curtis, the tournament’s most valuable player, made two free throws with 24 seconds left.
