TONIGHT’S GAME / ALAMO BOWL
No. 18 TEXAS A&M; (8-3) vs. No. 13 PENN STATE (9-3)
* When: 4:30 p.m.
* Television: ESPN
* Update: In his 34 years as Penn State coach, Joe Paterno has never had a four-game losing streak, but after starting the season 9-0, Penn State’s national championship hopes ended with consecutive losses to Minnesota, Michigan and Michigan State. The Nittany Lions have three All-American defensive players--linebackers Brandon Short and LaVar Arrington and defensive end Courtney Brown. Offensively, the quarterbacks flip-flopped, the running game was almost nonexistent, so receiver Chafie Fields would qualify as the team’s offensive most valuable player after catching 39 passes for 692 yards and five touchdowns. Texas A&M;’s 265-pound sophomore tailback Ja’Mar Toombs emerged as a force in the Aggies’ jumbo backfield with senior fullback D’Andre Hardeman. On defense, Aggie cornerback Jason Webster had a spectacular year with four interceptions and 71 tackles. He also is the team’s punt and kick returner.
