A 14-year-old girl jogging through her Newhall neighborhood this weekend was struck and critically injured by a motorist believed driving under the influence, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials.
Wendy Oliver, 37, of Valencia was driving north on Calgrove Boulevard just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday when she lost control of the sport-utility vehicle, which jumped the curb and hit a light pole near Valley Street, said Sheriff’s Lt. Bill Weiss of the Santa Clarita Valley station.
The vehicle continued north, striking the girl as she jogged along the sidewalk.
It then careened across the street, where it stopped after hitting a fence, Weiss said.
The girl, whose name was not released by authorities, suffered head, back and internal injuries. She remained in critical condition Sunday at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital.
Oliver suffered minor injuries to her face from hitting the steering wheel. She was arrested at the scene and booked at the Santa Clarita station on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in serious bodily injuries, Weiss said.
