The one penalty kick Mission Viejo goalkeeper Hannah Cochrun was able to stop in the shootout Wednesday night decided the Orange County Girls’ Soccer Coaches Assn. Senior All-Star Game at Chapman.
After regulation ended in a 1-1 tie, the teams went into a shootout and Cochrun’s diving save of the first shot, by Mater Dei’s Alison Fennell, gave the Blue Squad the edge in a 5-4 penalty-kick victory.
University’s Allyson Marquand and Kaley Pickett, Fountain Valley’s Melody Mangrello and Laguna Hills’ Megan Griffith all converted their kicks for the Blue Squad. El Toro goalkeeper Jacklyn Maag had no chance at any of the shots.
El Toro’s Lauren Orlandos and Mangrello, scored the only goals of the game and were selected as the game’s MVPs.
Orlandos, who will play at the University of Portland, gave the Blue Squad the lead early in the second half. She dribbled nearly the length of the field, juked a defender and knocked the ball into the corner of the goal, past a diving Maag.
Maag finished with six saves.
Mangrello, who will attend UC Irvine, tied the score with 15 minutes left in the game, when Stanford-bound Marquand crossed a ball to Mangrello in front of the goal. Cochrun came out and slid to contest the shot, but Mangrello went around her and slammed the ball into the open goal. Cochrun, who will play for Long Beach State, finished with four saves.
