Longtime Garden Grove Unified School District administrator Laura Schwalm was recently unanimously confirmed as superintendent, effective May 1. Schwalm, a native of Orange County, succeeds Ronald N. Walter, who announced his retirement effective April 30 after five years as superintendent and 34 years as a district employee.
Schwalm will be responsible for the daily operation of Garden Grove’s largest employer and the 11th largest of 999 public school districts in California. The 47,000-student district maintains 66 schools and serves most of Garden Grove and portions of Santa Ana, Westminster, Fountain Valley, Cypress, Stanton and Anaheim.
