EL MONTE — An El Monte police officer was charged Thursday with illegally discharging a handgun during an off-duty incident outside a bar.
Kerry Marie Shannon, 29, is accused of firing one round from a .45-caliber semiautomatic weapon that belonged to another officer, a prosecutor said. The incident occurred just after midnight July 21 in an alley behind Kick’s Bar in Diamond Bar, where Shannon and several other rookie officers had been celebrating the end of their probationary periods, Deputy Dist. Atty. Thomas Krag said.
Shannon is charged with discharging a firearm with gross negligence, a felony that carries a maximum prison term of three years, Krag said.
She is scheduled to surrender on Nov. 30 for arraignment in Pomona Municipal Court and her bail is recommended at $25,000.
“She has been suspended with pay pending the disposition of an internal affairs investigation,” said John A. Pilger, city public information officer. “Obviously, this is not the kind of behavior we condone.”
