Two Ventura County law enforcement agencies captured awards in a statewide SWAT team competition Monday.
The Oxnard Police Department won second place and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department came in third during the sixth annual event, which was staged in abandoned warehouses and shooting ranges throughout the county.
The Torrance Police Department took top honors in the competition that judged each agency on its tactics during reenactments of real-life SWAT situations, physical agility and shooting skills.
SWAT teams from police departments in Simi Valley, Ontario, Santa Monica, El Segundo, Barstow and Beverly Hills also participated during the daylong event, Ventura Police Sgt. Bob Velaz said.
The Ventura Police Department, which as the host did not enter the contest, judged the nine teams. The event is sponsored by the local Police Department and Pittco, a company that supplies police equipment.
