State Admission Day

What is happening here? September 9 was California State Admission Day and not one word in the papers. However, there is a lot about celebrating Mexican independence day--at least five days of festivities.
I don’t mind the celebrations but really, for a battle that gave Mexico independence from Spain--with the help of the United States!
Is this the United States or what? One day for our Independence Day and five days for another country’s independence. Doesn’t make sense to me.
