In Orange Empire Conference baseball:
Fullerton 10, Saddleback 7--Dave Cosato had a double, two singles and three RBIs, and Eddie Romprey and Juan Munoz hit two-run singles for host Fullerton (.
Jon Paul Glascock pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to earn the save.
Riverside 8, Golden West 3--Riverside (30-10-1, 14-8) took command of the game with three runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth.
Ty Harper had an eighth-inning, two-run home run for host Golden West (19-19, 8-13).
In the South Coast Conference swimming championships:
Golden West wins men’s and women’s titles--The Golden West women set 13 conference records and four state records to score 966 points. Mt. San Antonio was second with 640.5 at Golden West College.
The Rustler women set state records in the 50-yard freestyle (Kirsten Rich, 23.44), 200 freestyle relay (Michelle Cobarrubias, Rich, Ashley Selleh, Kim Steele, 1:38.10), 400 freestyle relay (Rich, Selleh, Micha Burden, Alyson Edoff, 3:32.48) and the 800 freestyle relay (Burden, Rich, Selleh, Edoff, 7:43.91).
The men won every event except diving and scored 1,045.5 points. Mt. San Antonio was second with 483.5.
The Rustlers’ Derek Gibb set a state record in the 50 freestyle (20.32) and Christian Harcsas set conference records in the 200 individual medley (1:51.95), the 100 backstroke (49.59) and the 200 backstroke (1:47.84).
In the Orange Empire Conference swimming championships:
Saddleback men and women take second--Steve Poling and Chris Boyer scored individual victories on the last day of competition at Saddleback College.
Former Mission Viejo High standout Boyer dropped more than eight seconds off his preliminary time to finish the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.89. Poling, formerly of Laguna Hills High, finished the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.51.
Saddleback finished second with 558 points. Riverside was first (728) and Grossmont was third (542).
In the women’s competition, Caroline Staub’s victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.71) helped Saddleback to a second-place finish with 632 points. Grossmont took first with 728 and Palomar took third (531).
In the Orange Empire Conference track and field championships:
Orange Coast women, Santa Ana men win--Zoila Gomez won the 3,000 meters (10:31.04), 5,000 (19:16.7) and 10,000 (37:20.80) as the Orange Coast women’s team finished first. The Pirates also got victories from Heather Shurtleff, who won the 1,500 in 4:47.91, and Nicole Hansen, who won the pole vault in 11-0. Santa Ana won the men’s title, with Matt Primous winning the high jump (6-8) and long jump (23-4 1/4) and Shelton Davis winning the 400 in 49.66.
