Let’s Get to Root of Building Defects

* Re “Bill Puts Homeowners’ Rights at Stake,” Orange County Voices, Aug. 13:
The article appears to reveal a subject that many might think only an occasional occurrence--home builders being sued for construction defects.
A couple of years ago, I learned that defects were so prevalent one homeowners association set up a new division staffed with several employees devoted full time to reconstruction projects based on lawsuit settlements.
Association staff would enjoy doughnuts in the coffee room from the lawyers prosecuting the cases--again a full-time activity. Also on hand was the construction company that performed the repairs.
Whenever any legal matter becomes a full-time activity for large groups of workers, it is probably time for government action.
In my opinion, thwarting lawsuits is not the appropriate action in this situation; rather I would prefer that solutions to the root causes of defects be pursued.
