What kind of New Year’s resolution about high school sports have you made or would like to make?
*
ERIC RAPLEY
Trabuco Hills, Football
My new year’s sports resolution is to get better and better at whatever I do, to keep up with all the workouts I’m doing and to keep focused on what’s important in life, to reach all my goals, to give most of my attention to my family. Last year, I tried to get more than 100 tackles and to get more than five sacks. I plan to do nothing less than what I did last year. I basically want to help whatever team I play with next year win football games. I want to do the best I can for them.

RENE SANCHEZ
La Quinta, Basketball
I want to go to a big college and start as [a soccer] goalie. I want to get athlete of the year for my school because it’s a big award and there’s a lot of people who play different sports at my school and it’s very competitive. I also want to make the playoffs and make something happen for our basketball team. I just want to be one of the best players in league.

KEVIN REYNOLDS
Villa Park, Basketball Coach
I’d like to see the sport of basketball go back into the good guy’s hands and get away from the all-star club guys who are tearing the sport apart. We also need to get away from all the player movement from school to school. And I’d like to see the Internet message board mentality, the rumor mongering and locker room gossip that flows through the sport go away. Today, everybody talks before they have a semblance of any truth. This Jerry Springer talk show approach to put people on trial is ridiculous.

COURTNEY ABEREGG
El Dorado, basketball
As the commissioner of girls’ athletics at El Dorado, I would like to see our athletes take a more active role in promoting good sportsmanship and become influences on the people we come in contact with. For me personally, I’m going to learn to dribble better.

MEGAN MULHAUPT
Santa Margarita, Golf
I want to improve my practice habits. Instead of just going out there and whacking balls, I’d like to get more done. Like coach always says, it’s not the quantity of practice, it’s the quality. I really want to improve my short game. Everybody likes to wham it out there real far, but that’s not going to help in the long run. I also want to work on communicating with colleges and focus more on what I need to get into a good college. I want to join the AJGA because it’s a lot more competitive and I can learn from the players out there and get to know what I have to do to be successful.
NEXT QUESTION
How difficult is it, or would it be, to participate in two sports during the same season?
