OCC, Cypress Women Play for State Berths

Orange Coast College has a short drive and a good chance and Cypress has a long drive and a difficult assignment tonight, when both teams play for berths in the women’s state basketball tournament.

Orange Coast (27-5), seeded sixth, visits No. 3 Cerritos (26-5) in a third-round game at 7 p.m. Cypress, seeded 24th, must play at top-seeded Ventura.

Despite being on the road, OCC has some factors in its favor. The Pirates beat Cerritos in early December and won two nonconference games in Cerritos’ gym.

The Pirates also have four players scoring in double figures, led by sophomore guard Shauna Steward (12.5 per game).

Cypress (12-19) has been the surprise of the postseason. The Chargers upset No. 9 Rio Hondo, 70-64, in the first round, then stunned No. 8 San Diego Mesa, 75-45, on Tuesday.

Freshman guard Triana Allen had 29 points against Mesa and is averaging 16. Sophomore forward Sharee Brown is averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds.
