Hinojosa Helps Pepperdine Rally to Beat Gonzaga

Damaris Hinojosa showed Thursday why she was selected West Coast Conference freshman of the year in women’s basketball.
The former Moorpark High star contributed a career-high 29 points, six assists and five steals to Pepperdine’s 82-71 come-from-behind victory over Gonzaga in the first round of the WCC tournament at Santa Clara.
Hinojosa made 10 of 21 shots, including four from three-point range, to help the Waves (20-8) tie a school record with their 10th consecutive victory and advance to the semifinals tonight.
“Damaris played her best all-around game of the season and it could not have come at a better time,” Coach Mark Trakh of Pepperdine said.
Top-seeded Pepperdine trailed at halftime to No. 8-seeded Gonzaga, 37-31, but opened the second half by scoring the first eight points. The Waves took the lead for good, 51-49, on a basket by Hinojosa with 12:45 to play, igniting a 13-0 run.
Dee Braxton scored 20 points and Rasheeda Clark had 14 points and five assists for the Waves.
SOFTBALL
Canyons 2, Moorpark 1--Valerie Reyes had two hits, including a run-scoring double, for the Cougars (10-3, 3-0) in a Western State Conference interdivisional game at Canyons.
Casey Georgeson hit a run-scoring double in the seventh inning for Moorpark (6-9, 2-1).
Ventura 3, Valley 2--Crystal Gravelin slugged a two-run home run in the seventh inning to lift the Pirates to a Western State Conference interdivisional victory at Valley (1-8, 0-2).
Yvette Carmona (3-0) pitched a six-hitter with six strikeouts for Ventura (3-0 in conference),
Vanessa Vargas had a double, triple and run batted in for the Monarchs (1-8, 0-2).
Pt. Loma Nazarene 2-4, Cal Lutheran 0-0--The Regals (4-10) mustered only eight hits and made five errors in a nonconference doubleheader loss at Cal Lutheran.
Santa Barbara 2, Glendale 1--Julie Choi hit a run-scoring double in the third inning but the Vaqueros (7-7, 1-2) lost a WSC interdivisional game at Glendale.
BASEBALL
Moorpark 9, Glendale 7--Tyler Johnson pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief for the Raiders in a WSC game at Stengal Field.
Johnson (1-0), who entered the game in the first inning, struck out nine and walked six.
Brian Fatur and Brandon Voorhees each had three hits for Moorpark (4-7, 1-1).
Canyons 15, Cuesta 7--Garrett Behnke’s three-run home run highlighted a nine-run fourth inning for the Cougars in a WSC game at Canyons.
Steve Lombardi had four hits and four RBIs for Canyons (6-4, 2-0).
Eric Ballew hit solo home runs in the third and fourth innings for Canyons.
Pierce 9, Ventura 4--Eugene Holdgraffer had three hits for the Brahmas in a WSC interdivisional victory at Pierce.
Nick Browne hit a two-run home run in the third inning to give Pierce a 5-1 lead.
Peter Gunny had two hits, including a two-run double in the eighth inning for Pierce (6-4, 2-0).
Kurt Probasco had two hits and scored two runs for Ventura (7-4, 0-2).
