March to Spotlight Sexual Violence

The third annual “Take Back the Night” rally is scheduled for downtown Ventura on April 5.
The rally, to raise awareness about sexual assault, is being put on by the Coalition to End Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence.
“We march on the main street to make a point that sexual assault is not all right with this community,” said Susan Becker, program director for the Coalition to End Domestic Violence and Sexual Violence. “Nobody deserves to be raped and we want those who have to know they have done nothing wrong.”
The evening is an opportunity to honor survivors and commit to safety for women, children and men, she said.
The program includes guest speakers Kathy Long of the Ventura County Board of Supervisors, Lela Henke-Dobroth of the Ventura County district attorney’s office and Alicia Juarez of the coalition’s Westside Family Center.
There will also be a self-defense demonstration and a testimonial speaker. After the rally, participants will lead a candlelight march in downtown Ventura.
The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Mission Park. For more information about the march call Gina Gutierrez at the coalition at 983-6014. For the 24-hour hotline call 656-1111.
