Value of Vocational Training in Schools

* “Vocational Students Upbeat on Jobs” [March 8] paints a bright picture for those seeking construction jobs but misses the point about the lack of vocational training.
The reality is that two-thirds of the “shop” programs have closed in the last two decades. Considering that 87% of high school students do not go on and graduate from college within six years, now is the time to focus on the kind of hands-on education that prepares students for high wage jobs in construction and other industries. With journeyman-level positions paying about $70,000 per year, construction has a lot to offer.
