Fusion Handles MetroStars, 3-1

From Associated Press

Roy Lassiter, Eric Wynalda and Diego Serna scored goals as the Miami Fusion defeated the New York-New Jersey MetroStars, 3-1, at Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Sunday.

Miami’s victory spoiled German star Lothar Matthaeus’ debut in Major League Soccer.

“I hope I can help the young players this season,” Matthaeus said. “This game proved that you must work 90 minutes. Soccer is good in America. You have good players all over the league.”

Wynalda gave Miami a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute, beating goalkeeper Mike Amman with a header off a corner kick. Serna made it 3-1 in the 64th minute.
