Reno Says Elian Is ‘Well, Happy’

Atty. Gen. Janet Reno described Cuban castaway Elian Gonzalez as glad to be with his father at the secluded Maryland compound where they have been staying. When asked if she had confidence that the 6-year-old boy at the center of a bitter international custody battle is well and happy, Reno replied: “I think he is.” Elian and his family have been staying at the Wye River compound east of Washington until the appeals court decides whether he should go back to Cuba or get a political asylum hearing.
