Police Chases

After reading the headline, “New Device Puts Halt to Car Chases” (May 24), I was at first excited that someone had finally figured out a way to stop police chases. Then I read the details; 1) it is a chip that must be installed on new cars starting in (gasp) 2005 and that 2) the car manufacturers that must ultimately install them sharply oppose doing it. Add to that the fact that a criminal in an older, “more desirable” vehicle will not be stopped and you have a recipe for trouble.
Plus, with all the enterprising young computer hackers out there outsmarting the authorities, how long before some of them build their own laser guns and start slowing down cars all around them on the freeway just for kicks? I can hardly wait! Next . . .
