The Southern California Indian Center will receive $24,000 from the Thelma Pearl Howard Foundation to help fund children’s tribal education programs, which are aimed at advocating and passing on American Indian traditions.
The Garden Grove-based center also provides counseling, health education, alcohol and drug programs, along with transportation services, in Orange and Los Angeles counties.
The foundation gave away nearly $400,000 in grants last week to 20 other nonprofit organizations throughout the region. It awards grants to groups that help needy children throughout the Southland.
The fund was named after the late live-in cook and housekeeper for the Walt Disney family. Thelma Pearl Howard, who worked in the Disney household for 30 years, was periodically given shares of Walt Disney Co. stock. When she died in 1994, her estate was large enough to endow the foundation that now bears her name.
