Corona del Mar’s upset of Costa Mesa and University’s emergence behind the play of Zack Sherwood, Jay Nichols and the league’s best-scoring defense, has created a wide-open race for the Pacific Coast League title. Sherwood, a kicker and receiver, is one of the county’s top scorers with 64 points. If it takes a field goal to win this game, Sherwood already has eight. The Trojan defense is 27 points better than Estancia’s in scoring defense, but the Eagles should have a special motivation: In last year’s season finale, University defeated Estancia, 48-12, to claim the league’s final playoff berth.
