UCI Hosts Cross-Country Invitational

The UC Irvine cross-country invitational has its annual running today at Central Park in Huntington Beach.
The women’s 5,000-meter race, which features competitors from No. 10 Arizona State, No. 13 Northern Arizona and the 25th-ranked Anteaters, starts at 9 a.m.
The men’s five-mile race is scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m and include runners from No. 11 Arizona State, No. 15 Northern Arizona and No. 16 Southern Utah.
VOLLEYBALL
Melissa Owen, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker at Capistrano Valley High, has committed to play at Utah State, said Michael Soylular, coach of the Laguna Beach Volleyball Club.
SOFTBALL
Orange High has hired Chelcee Clifton as softball coach, Athletic Director Alicia Seevers said. Clifton replaces Lacee Collins, who resigned in the middle of last season.
SWIMMING
John Moore has resigned as boys’ swimming coach at Corona del Mar High, Athletic Director Jerry Jelnick said. Moore plans to devote more time to the Irvine Novaquatics.
BADMINTON
Ardy Wiranata of the Colorado Springs advanced to the men’s final of the U.S. Open Badminton Championships Friday, defeating third-seeded Mark Constable of England, 10-15, 15-4, 15-13, at the Orange County Badminton Club in Orange.
Wiranata will play top-seeded Anders Boesen of Denmark in today’s final. Boesen defeated Daniel Eriksson of Sweden, 15-4, 15-6.
In a women’s semifinal, Meiluawati of Colorado Springs defeated Hyun Sook Kim of South Korea, 11-8, 7-11, 13-12. Meiluawati will face South Korea’s Ma Ree Choi, who defeated Denmark’s Christina Sorensen, 11-9, 11-7, in today’s final.
