* The most revealing and disturbing point in the article “District Has Shortage of Principals” (Aug. 27) is this: While educational experts agree that the principal is the most important person in the entire educational chain, the rewards go to the downtown administrators (bureaucrats).
If you look back over the years to schools recognized for their outstanding programs and involved communities, you will always find that it was the principal who inspired and motivated teachers and welcomed parental involvement at every level. These principals were the change agents in the school who brought sound educational programs and innovation to the school.
Until we really turn Los Angeles Unified School District upside down and put the rewards where they belong, we can never achieve the educational objectives we seek. Teachers and principals should be the best-paid people in the school system. Want to take bets on when that will happen?
