Police, Gendarmes March for Higher Pay

More than 10,000 French police and gendarmes held protests demanding higher pay and more staff to fight rising crime.
The gendarmes--police who patrol the countryside--extended an unprecedented series of protests to a fourth day in cities such as Paris, Bordeaux and Marseilles.
The protests aim to pressure the government before a delegation of gendarmes meets with Defense Minister Alain Richard today.
Gendarmes are part of the military and answer to the defense minister.
