Squeeze Play

I’m grateful for the attention given by Michael Phillips to the current syndrome that makes a play unproducible if it requires more than three or four actors (“More Than Four Actors Need Not Apply,” March 11). Despite the practical realities of cost that provoke it, this stricture is an artistically stultifying one that denies audiences a chance to see the kind of large-scale dramas that caused theater to flourish in the first place.
