OCTA Approves Bus Service for Seniors

A $28-million program to help the county and 16 cities offer low-cost bus service to senior citizens won unanimous approval Thursday from the Orange County Transportation Authority.
OCTA will provide refurbished, 17-passenger vans to cities that participate and will pay 80% of related expenses over the next 10 years.
Local governments in the program must pay the balance of the costs and design their own transportation systems for seniors.
OCTA studies show that the elderly often avoid bus routes and other public transportation because they seem too complicated. Some seniors also fear being unable to find their way home from bus stops.
