Dubois Powers Mission Viejo Again, 35-3

Mission Viejo running back Robbie Dubois broke the 200-yard mark for the third consecutive game and the Diablos stifled a short-handed Laguna Hills offense Friday night, leading the way to a 35-3 nonleague victory at Mission Viejo High.

Dubois rushed for 204 yards in 17 carries, picking up 102 in each half before giving way to Diablo reserves late in the third quarter. Dubois, the region’s second-leading rusher coming into the game, already has 689 yards rushing this season.

Mission Viejo relied less on Dubois than it had in its two previous victories against Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon and Santa Ana Mater Dei. Jordan Palmer threw three touchdown passes for the Diablos, completing 11 of 14 for 99 yards.

The Diablos built a 21-0 lead at the half, holding Laguna Hills to 28 total yards and two first downs. The Hawks (2-1) were without three injured starters on offense--quarterback Chris Johnson, running back Matt Chandler and wide receiver Dane Endly--and managed positive yardage on only five of 18 first-half plays.

Mission Viejo racked up 171 yards in the first half, benefiting from several drives that started in Hawk territory.

Dubois fumbled on the Diablos’ opening drive of the game, but Mission Vijeo’s defense forced a fumble of its own five plays later on the Laguna Hills’ 18. Dubois later scored from the one for a 7-0 lead.

Mission Viejo got the ball back at midfield on its next possession, and took a 14-0 lead four plays later on a 10-yard touchdown reception by tight end Mark Dunn.

The Diablos strung together a 10-play, 68-yard drive on their next possession, taking a 21-0 lead on a 15-yard screen pass to fullback Ryan Powdrell.

La Puente Bishop Amat 30, Palos Verdes Peninsula 7--Donnie McCleskey rushed for 242 yards and three touchdowns in 22 carries to lead the Lancers at North Torrance High.

Division I Bishop Amat (2-0), 18th in The Times’ regional rankings, was one of the top-ranked teams in the country as recently as 1995, but finished 2-8 last season.

McCleskey, who rushed with 148 yards and two touchdowns in the Lancers’ season-opener against Valencia, had 124 yards and two touchdowns by halftime against the Division III Panthers (1-1). McCleskey broke six tackles en route to a 57-yard touchdown late in the first quarter and added a seven-yard scoring run on a fourth-and-three play with 8:05 left in the half to give Bishop Amat a 17-0 lead.

On the second play of the second half, McCleskey had a 48-yard touchdown run that increased the Lancers’ lead to 23-0.

Adam Simon caught four passes for 57 yards for Bishop Amat, including a 16-yard touchdown reception from Michael Lange in the third quarter that capped a nine-play, 73-yard drive. Lange completed 11 of 18 passes for 139 yards.

Jordan Munde broke the shutout on a three-yard touchdown run with 2:54 remaining. Munde led Peninsula with 38 yards in six carries.

West Covina South Hills 8, Covina Charter Oak 2--Marcus Nolan dove in from the two-yard line with 36 seconds remaining for the winning score, but the Huskies’ drive was keyed by a 22-yard scramble to the six-yard line by quarterback Ryan Repp.

“We lost containment on the play,” said Charter Oak Coach Lou Farrar. “Their kid gets out and scrambles one play, and the rest of the time we’re stopping him.”

It was the South Hills’ defense that did most of the stopping, holding the Chargers (1-2) to only 97 total yards and three yards rushing. Charter Oak quarterback Phillip Guerrero completed eight of 16 passes for 71 yards, but netted minus-21 yards on the ground. The Huskies had three sacks and one fumble recovery.

Problems in the punting game almost cost South Hills a victory for the second time this season. The Huskies (2-1) gave Charter Oak a 2-0 lead in the fourth quarter when the center snapped the ball over the head of the punter and out of the end zone for a safety. Last week, South Hills lost to Rosemead when the Panthers returned a blocked punt for a touchdown in the game’s last minute.

Servite 35, Tustin 12--Two long touchdowns by Matthew Slater helped spark Servite to a comeback victory over host Tustin (1-2). The Tillers jumped out to a 12-0 first-quarter lead on a Ricky Miller one-yard touchdown run and a 37-yard touchdown pass play from Daniel Dales to Chris Barrett.

Then Slater went to work. He returned a kickoff 95 yards for a score at the end of the first quarter and Servite (3-0) went on to score 35 points without giving up any. Chris Blanco scored on a 15-yard run on Servite’s next possession, and then Slater took a pitchout from quarterback Ryan Cosselt and sprinted 62 yards around end for a touchdown that gave the Friars a 21-12 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Cosselt connected with Dillon Bedard on a 35-yard scoring play. Cosselt finished 12 of 22 passing for 165 yards.

Tustin’s Miller had 79 yards in 22 carries and Dales was four of 12 for 44 yards with three interceptions.

Leuzinger 28, Los Alamitos 21--Senior running back Victor McClendon rushed 27 times for 182 yards and two touchdowns for Leuzinger (1-1-1) in the upset of Los Alamitos (1-2).

North Torrance 14, Beverly Hills 7--Quarterback Kenny Brown completed 10 of 20 passes for 111 yards and also rushed 14 times for 74 yards, including a game-winning, 25-yard touchdown run with 9:42 remaining in the fourth quarter to lift visiting North Torrance (3-0). Earlier, Peter Lopez caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Brown. Kyle McCall scored for Beverly Hills (1-2).

Edison 51, Dana Hills 26--A.J. Martinez returned the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown and later blocked a punt and returned it for another Edison (2-0) touchdown. Brett Spence added two touchdown runs and Marcus McCutcheon had a 60-yard touchdown reception for the sixth-ranked Chargers. Dana Hills is 2-1.

Glendora 32, San Dimas 6--Jeremy Reed carried 26 times for 159 yards and three touchdowns and Sean Martin completed 11 of 17 passes for 175 yards for Glendora (2-1). San Dimas fell to 0-2.
