Suicides, drug overdoses and murders rose in Humboldt County in 2001, the county coroner reported.
The coroner’s office handled 118 natural deaths, 27 suicides, 40 drug overdoses, eight homicides, 22 auto accident victims, 16 accidental deaths, nine drownings and two sudden infant death cases.
The cause of three deaths was listed as undetermined.
The biggest jump came in drug overdoses, with 40 last year compared with 24 in 2000, the report said. Most were blamed on heroin.
“[The increase] has been phenomenal,” Humboldt County Coroner Frank Jager said.
