Hutu rebels fired a rocket into Bujumbura in their first attack on the center of Burundi’s capital in at least two years, wounding at least six people, army sources and residents said.
The attack struck Bujumbura’s mainly Muslim central district of Buyenzi, and residents said most of the wounded were market porters sleeping in the open air in a courtyard.
Rebel sources said the main Hutu rebel group, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy, was responsible for the attack. According to army sources, the rebels launched the rocket from a fishing boat on Lake Tanganyika.
