Halt Urged for Red Line Station Project

An MTA committee recommended Thursday that the transit agency suspend developing the land it owns around the North Hollywood subway station until it figures out what it wants.
In November, the planning and programming committee had recommended that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority board enter into exclusive talks with a team of developers to build a $90-million urban village next to the Metro Red Line station that would have combined residential and retail space.
But when board members disagreed over the proposal, the staff realized the agency’s vision for the site “wasn’t clearly articulated,” said James L. de la Loza, the MTA’s executive officer for countywide planning and development.
Deferring development, De la Loza added, would allow the MTA more time to meet with community members and achieve a broader consensus on the development’s goals.
Also Thursday, the planning committee recommended that the MTA enter into exclusive negotiations with developers for building commercial space and high-density living units at the Wilshire / Vermont Red Line station as well as at the Hollywood and Vine Red Line stop.
