Majority of Dangerous Drivers Are Over 30

Re “Calling In Bad Teen Drivers,” March 19: My daughter turned 16 in January and this month received her provisional license. For those unfamiliar with the byzantine regulations imposed upon new drivers, this means she can drive by herself but without other kids in the car for the next six months.
For years, when I drove her to school, the most frightening part of the day was when I dropped her off or picked her up. Vehicles entered parking areas occupied by children as young as 5 going the wrong way while ignoring stop signs or at speeds in excess of those lawful on the street. The drivers of these vehicles were drinking coffee, reading the paper, chatting on the phone, applying makeup, eating breakfast or continuing a conversation with a similar driver in an adjacent vehicle. In all instances the aforementioned vehicles were operated by persons 30 or older. Even in this well-to-do community these drivers were unable to afford vehicles equipped with turn indicators and/or front license plates and/or license plates issued by this state. Or did they just not use them?
Why not extend the dangerous-driver 800-number bumper sticker program to soccer moms and dads?
