Shoeless in the Philippines

Thanks for the beautiful shot of the rice terraces in the village of Batad in the Northern Luzon highlands, Philippines, taken by Mary Lang (My Best Shot, April 28). To add to her comment, “The people had no shoes, but they wore prescription glasses”: Going barefoot is perhaps the most practical way of slogging along a mucky, unpaved road. If your eyesight is not good, you really need prescription glasses to see where you’re going, or you could fall off the dikes bordering the terraced rice fields.
