A Dana Point man died Sunday while kayaking in the calm waters of Dana Point Harbor.
An autopsy is scheduled today to determine why William Boos, 46, died.
Boos was kayaking with a friend in the outer channel of the harbor’s west end when he apparently toppled into the water about 8:15 a.m., according to police.
“His friend turned around to say something to him and saw him in the water,” said Lt. Greg Russell, a spokesman for the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. “He disappeared under the water before his friend could get to him.”
The unidentified friend was paddling in another kayak about 30 yards away, Russell said. The friend jumped into the water, but could not find Boos and called police.
Investigators said it is unclear whether Boos could swim.
