India and Pakistan exchanged deadly shelling in Kashmir and threats of war, with New Delhi saying it “accepted the challenge thrown by our neighbor” and Islamabad warning of retaliation.
But both governments also said they favored peace.
At least six people from both sides were reported killed in the shelling across the cease-fire line dividing the disputed territory of Kashmir.
Pakistani shells also fell in the Indian state of Punjab, but there were no casualties.
