A Truly Flat State, but Sky-High in Beauty

“Flat, and Just Plain Great” (editorial, Aug. 2) was appreciated since I, a native Californian, lived and worked in Hutchinson, Kan., from 1991 into 1999. I found Kansas to be a beautiful state in spite of its reputation, now proven to be “flat as a pancake.” It was best described for me by Wendy J. Miller, who teaches at the Eastern Mennonite Seminary in Harrison, Va., as we were driving from the airport in Wichita back to Hutchinson one afternoon. She said: “I love to come to Kansas. The sky goes on forever.” So it does, and the sunsets are spectacular.

In addition to its abundant farmland, which produces so much food, its people are “the salt of the Earth.” If my grandchildren were not living in California, I’d probably still be living in Kansas in retirement. It’s good to be home in California, but I confess I miss Kansas’ blue skies and wide-open spaces. Every state has unique things to offer to each of the other 49.
