Hiker Missing in Mountains Above Palm Springs

Rescuers searched Sunday for a missing Danish national who apparently disappeared while hiking in the snow-covered San Jacinto Mountains west of Palm Springs.
The 38-year-old man, whose identity has not been released, filled out a hiking permit Wednesday, said Cpl. Dennis Gutierrez, a spokesman for the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities began searching Sunday after learning the man’s rental car had been sitting several days in a parking lot where hikers take a tram up to the mountains, Gutierrez said.
The Danish government had been alerted, and confirmed that the man had not returned home, he said.
The search was called off late Sunday because of darkness, but will begin again today, Gutierrez said.
