Senate Approves Tracking HIV by Name

The state Senate unanimously approved a bill Thursday that would track HIV patients by name, rather than alphanumeric codes, in order to preserve up to $50 million in federal funding.
The bill, passed on a 33-0 vote, now goes to the Assembly. The Schwarzenegger administration has indicated its support.
The code system, which has been in place since July 2002, has been widely characterized as a failure.
The federal government plans to cut funding beginning this fall to states that do not have a reliable HIV-tracking system.
