More Public Funding of Campaigns Sought

A City Council panel voted Wednesday to draw up a detailed program to greatly expand the public financing of campaigns for elected offices to try to make the races more competitive.
A report from the city’s legislative analyst found that the program could cost $9 million annually. The report also will explore ways to pay for the program without tapping the city’s general fund.
