Wang pitches tired Yankees past Tigers

DETROIT -- The New York Yankees didn’t look like a team suffering from lack of sleep.
Johnny Damon homered and tripled, Melky Cabrera added a three-run triple and Chien-Ming Wang pitched eight effective innings, leading the Yankees to a 7-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night.
Most players didn’t arrive at the ballpark until two hours before game time, after the Tigers beat the Yankees, 9-6, on Carlos Guillen’s three-run homer in the 11th inning early Saturday in a game that started more than four hours late because of strong storms. Several players said they did not get to sleep until 5 a.m.
Wang (15-6) improved to 5-1 in his last seven starts, yielding two runs -- one earned -- and five hits. He held the Tigers without an extra-base hit, ending their streak at 89 games. It was their longest such streak in at least 50 years.
Jeremy Bonderman (10-7) fell to 0-6 in his last eight starts. He gave up seven runs, eight hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings. He did not strike out a batter as Detroit fell to 12-25 since July 19.
“I’m puzzled by the way that keeps happening,” Tigers Manager Jim Leyland said. “Believe me, if I had any answers, I’d tell everyone, starting with Bondo.”
