Conductor out: Claudio Abbado, who was scheduled to lead the gala opening of Carnegie Hall’s 117th season next month, has canceled his appearances for health reasons. The 74-year-old conductor, who underwent stomach cancer surgery seven years ago, was to have led the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in three performances at Carnegie on Oct. 3, 4 and 6.

Going dark: For the fourth year, the Nickelodeon TV channel plans to shut down from noon to 3 p.m. on Sept. 29 to encourage its young viewers to get out and play, joining “in the fight against childhood obesity.”

Change of venue: The Black Tyranny tour, a heavy metal lineup topped by Bay Area quartet Machine Head and scheduled to open tonight at House of Blues in Anaheim, has been moved to the Glass House in Pomona. Tickets for the House of Blues date will be honored at the Glass House. The rescheduled event is slated to start at 7 p.m.
